The RRT Elk River Resource Recovery Facility has been in operation since 1989. The facility serves Anoka, Benton, Hennepin, Sherburne and Western Sherburne County residents. This facility has processed over six million tons of household garbage, also known as municipal solid waste (MSW), into green energy used by Great River Energy (GRE) to supply power to 35,000 homes each year.
Here is a summary of the process:
- MSW is processed into refuse derived fuel (RDF)
- Ferrous metals and aluminum are separated for recycling
- RDF processed by RRT is transferred over GRE Elk River Station to be combusted for electricity production.
- The by-product of ash is landfilled at the RRT Becker Ash Landfill
Tours of this facility are available for children and adults to learn more about our operations. Call the RRT Elk River Resource Recovery Facility at 763-441-3800 or visit the Renewable Fuels Tours section online.
